How to Tell the Sex of Young and Adult Budgies
Sexing budgies is mainly done by looking at the cere, the fleshy area above the beak. Age, mutation, breeding condition, lighting and photos can all change how reliable the answer is.
How do I sex a young normal-coloured budgie?
Young cocks usually show an even pink, purple or lilac cere, often smooth and fairly even across both nostrils. Young hens often show a paler blue, whitish, cream or light cere with clear white rings around the nostrils. In very young chicks the cere can change quickly, so a second check after a few weeks is useful.
How do I sex an adult cock bird?
Most adult cocks develop a strong blue cere, especially in normal blue or green series birds. Some mutations do not turn bright blue, so a mature cock may stay pink, purple, lilac or fleshy coloured depending on the mutation.
How do I sex an adult hen?
Adult hens often have a white, pale blue, tan or brown cere. In breeding condition the cere can become crusty brown. Out of breeding condition it may fade back to whitish, cream or pale blue. A brown cere is a strong hen sign, but a pale cere still needs age and mutation considered.
Do Clearwing, Greywing and Dilute change sexing?
Clearwing, Greywing and Dilute mainly affect body and wing colour, not the basic sexing rule. Look at the cere the same way: even pink/purple or blue is usually cock depending on age, while white nostril rings, cream, tan or brown point toward hen.
Do Opaline birds sex differently?
Opaline changes the wing and head pattern, not the cere rule. A young Opaline cock can still look pink or purple in the cere, and a young Opaline hen can still show white around the nostrils. Do not call a bird hen just because it is Opaline; Opaline is sex-linked, but both sexes can be visual depending on the pairing.
What about Cinnamon, Fallow, Lutino or Albino?
Ino and some fallow-type birds can make cock ceres stay pink, lilac or fleshy instead of bright blue. Cinnamon can also soften general colour, but the cere is still the main guide. For these mutations, a mature cock may not get the strong blue cere people expect, so compare age, cere texture and nostril rings carefully.
Can Pied budgies be harder to sex?
Yes. Recessive Pied and some pied combinations can leave mature cocks with a pink or fleshy cere instead of normal blue. A hen still tends toward whitish, tan or brown cere changes, especially in breeding condition. Pied birds should be sexed with extra caution if young.
Do Whitecap, Yellowface, Rainbow or Violet affect sexing?
Whitecap, Yellowface, Rainbow, Violet, Cobalt, Mauve, Olive and other colour project names do not change the basic cere method. They can make the bird visually complex, but sexing still comes back to cere colour, cere texture, age and breeding condition.
What photos are best for sexing?
Use a clear front photo of the face and cere in natural light, plus a side photo of the full bird. Avoid flash, coloured lights, shadows, dirty cage wire in front of the face and heavy photo filters. A blurry photo can make a young cock look like a hen or a young hen look like a cock.
When should I say “unsure”?
Say unsure when the bird is very young, moulting, photographed poorly, showing a mixed cere colour, or carrying a mutation known to affect cock cere colour. It is better to re-check later than to record the wrong sex in the breeding records.
Heritage Clearwing Basics
What is an Australian Heritage Clearwing?
An Australian Heritage Clearwing is a budgerigar line bred for the old-style Clearwing look: strong body colour, clean pale/white wings, good contrast and careful family tracking. The site focuses on Heritage Clearwing projects rather than general pet-store colour labels.
Why does the site use the word “Heritage”?
“Heritage” is used to separate these birds from ordinary mixed-colour budgies and from birds that only vaguely resemble Clearwings. It signals an interest in preserving the older Australian Clearwing direction, clean wings, type, records and breeding purpose.
What is the difference between Clearwing and Greywing?
Clearwing birds should show cleaner wings and stronger body colour. Greywing birds usually have more diluted body colour and grey wing markings. Some birds can be visually confusing, so the site records suspected birds carefully until breeding results help clarify them.
What does “Seafoam” mean on this site?
Seafoam is used as a project name for Whitecap/Yellowface-influenced blue-series Clearwings that show a soft green-blue or seafoam appearance. Because Whitecap/Yellowface expression can vary, the site treats parentage and chick results as important evidence.
What is an Amethyst Clearwing?
In this breeding program, Amethyst refers to a Cinnamon + Double Factor Violet Clearwing direction. The site treats Amethyst as a project bird that needs strong record keeping because Cinnamon is sex-linked and Violet factor can be single or double factor.

Genetics, Splits & Transparency
Why does the site say “suspected” or “possible”?
Many traits cannot be proven by appearance alone. “Suspected” means the bird may carry or show a trait, but the evidence is not strong enough yet. The bird should only be upgraded to proven when parentage, ring records or chick results support it.
What does “split” mean?
A split bird carries a recessive or sex-linked gene without necessarily showing it. For example, a cock can be split Cinnamon or split Opaline. Recessive traits such as Fallow or Dilute can also be carried without being visual.
Can hens be split Cinnamon or split Opaline?
In the usual sex-linked sense, hens are visual or not visual because they have one Z chromosome and one W chromosome. A hen receives her Z chromosome from her father, so sex-linked results must be recorded carefully.
Why is the father important for Opaline and Cinnamon hens?
Daughters receive their Z chromosome from the cock bird. That means a visual Opaline or Cinnamon hen needs the relevant gene from her father. A visual hen mother alone does not make all daughters visual for that sex-linked trait.
Is every Violet bird Double Factor?
No. A bird can be Single Factor Violet, Double Factor Violet, or visually hard to judge depending on base colour and dark factor. The site uses labels such as SF, DF, suspected and unknown to avoid overclaiming.
Why are breeding records so important?
Records connect a bird’s visual appearance to its parents, clutch, ring number and chick results. Over time, those records help confirm hidden splits, Whitecap/Yellowface strength, Violet factor, sex-linked inheritance and family quality.
What happens when you pair an Opaline Clearwing to a normal Clearwing?
The outcome depends on the sex of the chicks and whether the cock bird carries Opaline. Because Opaline is sex-linked, daughters can only be visual Opaline if the cock passes it to them. If the cock is the Opaline Clearwing parent, all daughters will be visual Opaline Clearwing and all sons will be split Opaline Clearwing — meaning the sons look like normal Clearwings but carry Opaline hidden. If the hen is the Opaline Clearwing parent, no daughters will be visual Opaline from this pairing, but the cock chicks will all be split Opaline. Does pairing an Opaline Clearwing to a normal Clearwing affect the colour of the non-Opaline chicks?
Yes — this is one of the most important things to understand when working with Opaline Clearwings. Opaline causes body colour to bleed into the wing area and mantle, which can make the wings appear less clean or suffused with body colour. In a non-Opaline chick from this pairing, the wings should be clean and pale as expected for a Heritage Clearwing. However, in a split Opaline cock chick the wings will still look clean because split birds do not show Opaline visually — they carry it hidden. The concern arises when Opaline expression is strong in the family line, because even subtle colour bleed on visual Opaline chicks can make wing assessment harder. This is why Opaline status must be recorded separately from wing quality — a bird with good clean wings and split Opaline parentage is still worth recording as a split, not as a clean non-Opaline.
What is colour bleed in an Opaline Clearwing?
Colour bleed refers to body colour appearing in areas that should be pale or clear in a Clearwing — most commonly the wing coverts and mantle. In a normal Clearwing the wings should show pale or white with minimal body colour intrusion. In an Opaline bird, the Opaline pattern reverses the usual distribution, pushing body colour toward the mantle and wings rather than keeping it on the body only. When Opaline and Clearwing are combined, the result can be a bird where the mantle shows strong colour and the wings may also pick up some colour bleed depending on the strength of the Opaline gene in that family. This is not the same as a dirty wing caused by Greywing or Dilute influence — Opaline colour bleed typically shows as body-coloured patches on the mantle and upper wing coverts rather than an overall grey or diluted wing marking. Keep wing and mantle descriptions in your records separately so future breeding decisions are based on the actual pattern, not just a colour label.

How should I use the Simple Genetics Calculator?
Use it as a planning guide. Select the cock and hen traits, then read the results as likely outcomes, not guarantees. Unknown splits, incorrect visual identification and complex Yellowface/Whitecap expression can change real nest results.
Why does the calculator give warnings?
The warnings are there to stop people treating a guess as proof. The calculator can explain basic inheritance, but actual chicks and proper records are still the strongest evidence for a breeding program.
What are project-bird presets?
Presets such as Seafoam, Red Violet, Violet/Mauve, Rainbow, Amethyst and Greywing pre-fill common trait combinations. They are still editable because every real bird may have different splits, base colour, Whitecap strength or Violet factor status.

Is the health section a replacement for an avian vet?
No. The health pages are for learning, observation and first-response awareness. Sick budgies can decline quickly, so serious signs should be discussed with an avian vet as soon as possible.
What should I check every day?
Check appetite, droppings, breathing, posture, activity, feather condition, feet, beak, water, seed/food quality and cage cleanliness. Small daily changes often give the earliest warning that something is wrong.
Why is quarantine included on the site?
Quarantine protects the whole aviary. New birds, sick birds and birds returning from outside contact should be separated and observed. The Downloads page includes a Quarantine Checklist Word template.
What foods are toxic to budgies?

Pied, Rainbow & Project Birds
What is a Pied Clearwing?
A Pied Clearwing carries one of the Pied mutations (Dominant, Recessive or Clearflight) in combination with Clearwing. Dominant Pied and Recessive Pied behave very differently — Dominant Pied only needs one copy to show, while Recessive Pied must be inherited from both parents to be visually pied. Record Pied type carefully because the visual difference between SF and DF Dominant Pied can be significant.
What is the difference between Single Factor and Double Factor Dominant Pied?
A Single Factor Dominant Pied bird carries one copy of the gene and usually shows varied pied markings — patches of white or yellow on the body. A Double Factor bird carries two copies and typically shows much more white or body colour clearing, sometimes appearing almost fully coloured with reduced pied patches. Test breeding back to a normal bird is the most reliable way to tell them apart — all chicks pied means DF, roughly half pied means SF.
What is a Rainbow Clearwing?
A Rainbow in this context is a Clearwing that also carries Opaline and Whitecap/Yellowface (usually Single Factor). The combination of those three traits produces the typical Rainbow appearance — iridescent mantle, pale wings and a mask influenced by Yellowface or Whitecap. Violet Rainbow birds also carry Violet factor, often producing a rich cobalt-violet body colour.
What is a Red Violet Clearwing?
Red Violet refers to a Cobalt-based bird (one dark factor) carrying Single Factor Violet. The Violet factor on a Cobalt base produces the distinctive rich red-violet appearance that is highly sought in Heritage Clearwing programs. Double Factor Violet on Cobalt looks similar but tends to show a slightly different depth and is worth recording separately.
Can a green bird produce blue chicks?
Yes — if the green bird is split for blue (carrying one copy of the blue gene). Green is dominant over blue, so a split bird looks visually green but can pass the blue gene to approximately 50% of its chicks. When paired to a blue series bird, roughly half the chicks will be blue series and half will be visually green (some of those also carrying blue). What is Seafoam and how is it bred?
Seafoam on this site describes a Whitecap/Yellowface blue-series Clearwing that shows a soft green-blue or seafoam body tint. The effect comes from Single Factor or Double Factor Whitecap/Yellowface acting on a blue-series bird. Single Factor typically produces a yellow-green mask and slight body tint; Double Factor can produce a stronger seafoam appearance. Because Whitecap expression varies, parentage records and chick results are essential for understanding each family line.

Can Clearwing budgies be green series?

Can a normal-looking cock be split Opaline?
